Lawn Care Door Hangers vs Flyers: Which One Books More Lawns

By Faisal Zaman, Senior SEO Strategist · Overcome Media

Lawn care door hangers usually book more lawns than flyers, because you choose every street they land on. Mailed flyers cost more per home and land in a pile. Either one works only when aimed at streets beside lawns you already mow.

Key points

  • Door hangers cost about 14 cents a home to print, or 24 to 29 cents with hired delivery.
  • Mailed flyers through Every Door Direct Mail cost 26 cents a home in postage alone.
  • No independent study measures door hanger response rates, so track your own.
  • The best streets are the ones beside customers you already serve.
  • A tracking number on each piece tells you which one paid.
  • Putting either piece in a mailbox without postage breaks federal law.

The print prices below come from printer websites we checked in October 2026. Postage comes from the USPS. Response rates come from the ANA, the advertisers’ trade body, and they cover mail, not door hangers.

The lawn care figures we quote from our own accounts are labeled as ours. Any arithmetic built on top of them is labeled illustrative.

Lawn care door hangers vs flyers: which books more lawns?

For most lawn care companies, door hangers win. The reason is control. You pick the exact houses, so every piece lands where your trucks already drive.

Route density is where lawn care makes its money. Ten lawns on one street beat ten lawns spread across town. A door hanger is the only print piece you can aim one house at a time.

Flyers still have a job. Mailed flyers reach every home on a postal route with no walking. Handed out flyers work at events, garden centers and the counter of a hardware store.

How much do lawn care door hangers and flyers cost?

Printing is the small part. Getting the piece to the home is the big part. Here is what we found on printer and postal pages in October 2026, before shipping and add ons.

  • UPrinting listed 1,000 door hangers on 14 point gloss card at $140.01, about 14 cents each.
  • 4OVER4 listed 1,000 rip off door hangers at $415.10 and 5,000 at $1,109.81.
  • UPrinting’s flyer page says 1,000 flyers run about 12 cents each.
  • USPS lists Every Door Direct Mail retail postage at 26 cents a piece.

Delivery is where the gap opens. A distribution company that published its 2026 pricing quotes 8 to 20 cents a door. Most metro jobs over 5,000 pieces land at 10 to 15 cents.

So a hired door hanger drop runs about 24 to 29 cents a home. A mailed flyer runs about 38 cents. Walk the hangers yourself and the cost drops to the print, plus your time.

What response rate should you expect from lawn care flyers?

The best public numbers are for mail, not door hangers. The ANA 2024 Response Rate Report, as reported by Printing Impressions, puts direct mail at 5 to 9 percent to a house list.

To a prospect list, it is 4 to 5 percent. A house list means past customers. A prospect list means strangers, which is what a door hanger drop is.

We found no independent study of door hanger response rates. Printers and distributors advertise ranges, but those are sellers’ figures. Treat any number you read as a guess until your own tracking proves it.

What you can do is work out what each call costs at different rates. The chart below is illustrative arithmetic, not a forecast.

For comparison, one lawn care company we run Google Ads for paid $31.36 per conversion from May to June 2026. That was $8,438 for 193 conversions.

At a 30 to 50 percent booking rate, that works out to $63 to $105 per booked lawn. That is illustrative math on our own number. It is the bar your door hangers have to beat.

Where should you hang lawn care door hangers?

Start beside the lawns you already mow. Your neighbors can see the result over the fence. Your crew is already on the street, so a new lawn there costs no extra drive time.

Work outward in rings:

  • The five homes on each side of every customer and across the street.
  • The rest of the street, the same week you mow there.
  • The neighborhood around your densest cluster of customers.
  • New subdivisions where homeowners have no lawn company yet.

Door hangers also fill a gap the map leaves. One lawn care client of ours held 368 reviews at 4.9 stars. It still ranked 1st near its office and 12th downtown.

Reviews do not beat distance on Google Maps. Paper on the door does not care how far the street is from your shop. Our Google Maps SEO guide explains why the map works that way.

Timing matters too. Hang in late winter and early spring, before homeowners sign with someone else. A second drop in late summer sells aeration and overseeding.

What should a lawn care flyer or door hanger say?

One offer, one phone number, one reason to call this week. Most pieces fail because they list every service and give nobody a reason to act now.

Layout guide for a lawn care door hanger: neighbor headline at the top, one seasonal offer, a large tracked phone number, a QR code to a quote form, review stars, and a tear off coupon at the bottom
The parts of a door hanger that earn a call, top to bottom.

What to put on it:

  • A neighbor headline, such as “We mow on your street every Tuesday”.
  • One seasonal offer with a date it ends.
  • A phone number big enough to read from the porch.
  • A QR code to a short quote form.
  • Your star rating and review count, matching what Google shows.
  • Your logo and truck colors, so the crew is recognized next time.

Keep the brand the same as your trucks and yard signs. Our guide to truck wraps and lettering covers why that repetition builds trust.

Real photos beat stock. A picture of a lawn your crew actually striped looks like a neighbor’s yard, because it is one.

No. Federal law, 18 U.S.C. 1725, fines anyone who puts mailable matter in a mailbox without paying postage. That covers flyers, door hangers and business cards.

Hang them on the door handle instead. Never tuck them in the mailbox, the flag or the post.

Local rules vary. Some towns require a solicitor permit, and some homes post “no soliciting” signs. Check with your town clerk before the first drop, and skip any house with a sign.

Mailed flyers through Every Door Direct Mail avoid all of this. The postage makes it legal mail, and USPS caps drops at 5,000 pieces per ZIP Code per day.

How do you know if your door hangers worked?

Give every piece its own phone number. A tracking number that forwards to your main line shows each call, the time and the caller. Then you compare each drop with what your Google Ads cost.

Add a QR code with a tagged link to your quote form. Ask every new caller where they heard about you, and write it down.

Keep the tracking number on print and ads only. Your Google Business Profile should show your main number. Our call tracking guide shows how to set both up.

Every new lawn from a door hanger should also become a review. Send the request after the first cut. Our guide on how to get more Google reviews has the text to send.

Frequently asked questions

Do door hangers work for lawn care?

Yes, when they are aimed at streets you already serve and tracked with their own number. They work best in late winter and spring. They work worst when scattered across town with no offer.

How many door hangers should I hand out?

Start with 1,000 around your best cluster of customers. Track the calls for three weeks before ordering more. Your own cost per call decides the next order, not a printer’s discount.

Are flyers or door hangers cheaper?

Flyers are cheaper to print, at about 12 cents each per 1,000 on one printer’s page. Mailing them adds 26 cents in EDDM postage. Door hangers cost more to print but less to deliver, so they usually come out cheaper per home.

What is a good response rate for lawn care flyers?

There is no independent benchmark for lawn care flyers. The ANA 2024 report puts direct mail at 4 to 5 percent to prospects. Use that as a ceiling to test against, and measure your own with a tracking number.

Should I use print or online ads for lawn care leads?

Both, for different jobs. Online ads catch people searching today. Door hangers fill in the streets around your route. Our lawn care leads guide ranks every channel by cost per job.
