Google Ads cost for a contractor comes down to three numbers. What a click costs, how many clicks call, and how many calls book. Trade clicks cost about $2 to $30 in 2026. The right monthly spend is set by the jobs you want, not by Google.
Key points
- Google has no minimum spend. You set a daily budget and pay per click.
- Roofing, HVAC and plumbing clicks cost $20 to $30 each in October 2026.
- Junk removal, tree and lawn clicks cost $6 to $8.
- The 2026 home services benchmark is $8.33 a click and $90.92 a lead.
- One of our lawn care accounts paid $31.36 per conversion.
- Cost per booked job is the number that decides if ads pay.
Where the numbers come from: the click prices are Semrush averages for the US. The lead benchmarks come from LocaliQ’s 2026 search advertising report. The billing rules come from Google’s own help pages.
The cost per conversion and cost per lead from our accounts are real and labeled. Any math that carries a lead through to a job is illustrative, and we say so.

How much does Google Ads cost per month for a contractor?
As much as you tell it to. Google sets no minimum. You pick an average daily budget and Google charges only when someone clicks.
The real question is what it takes to get enough calls. That depends on your trade. Click prices differ nearly ten times over between trades.
Your monthly Google Ads cost has two parts:
- Ad spend, paid to Google for clicks.
- Management, paid to whoever builds and runs the account.
- Tracking and landing pages, often bundled into management.
Ad spend is the part this guide prices. Agency fees vary by scope, and ours are on the pricing page.
Some illustrative math. At a $27 roofing click, $1,000 buys about 37 clicks. At a $6.40 lawn care click, it buys about 156.
What is the Google Ads cost per click by trade?

Click prices follow the size of the job. Trades with big tickets and emergencies sit at the top. A new roof or a dead AC in July is worth fighting for, so advertisers bid hard.
Average US click prices in October 2026, from Semrush:
- “AC repair near me”: $29.67.
- “Roof replacement”: $26.92.
- “Plumber near me”: $23.72.
- “Furnace repair”: $20.76.
- “Junk removal”: $7.50.
- “Lawn care service”: $6.40.
- “Dumpster rental”: $3.36.
These are national averages. Your market can run higher or lower. A busy metro with national brands bidding costs more than a small town with two local shops.
For the whole home services category, LocaliQ’s 2026 benchmark puts the average click at $8.33. That is the blend of cheap and expensive trades.
How does the Google Ads budget and billing work?
You pay in an auction, but not your full bid. Google says you often pay less than your maximum. You pay only what it takes to hold your spot.
Your spot depends on quality as well as price. A relevant ad and a strong landing page can beat a higher bid.
The daily budget is an average, not a hard cap. Google’s rules:
- On a busy day, spend can reach up to 2 times the daily budget.
- Over the month, you are never charged more than 30.4 times the daily budget.
- If Google overdelivers past that limit, it credits the difference.

So a $50 daily budget can spend $100 on a stormy Monday. It still cannot bill more than $1,520 for the month.
That is useful in the trades. Demand spikes after storms, cold snaps and heat waves. The 2 times rule lets the budget lean into those days.

What does a Google Ads lead and a booked job cost?
The click is only the start. A lead is a click that calls or fills a form. A job is a lead you book.
LocaliQ’s 2026 benchmark for home and home improvement shows 8.05 percent of clicks converting. The average lead costs $90.92.

Here is how the benchmark compares with our own accounts:
| Source | Channel | Cost per lead | Per booked job (illustrative) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home services benchmark, 2026 | Google search ads | $90.92 | $182 to $303 |
| Our lawn care account, May to June 2026 | Google search ads | $31.36 per conversion | $63 to $105 |
| Our junk removal account, September 2026 | Local Services Ads | $15.09 | $30 to $50 |
The lawn care account spent $8,438 over eight weeks. It drove 193 conversions.
The job column assumes a 30 to 50 percent booking rate. That is illustrative. Your real rate comes from call tracking, and it is the number that decides everything.
Expensive trades pay more per lead. At a $27 click and the same 8.05 percent rate, a roofing lead would cost about $335. That is illustrative math, not a measured result. It still pays when the job is a new roof.
How much should you spend on Google Ads?
Work backward from jobs, not forward from a round number. The steps:
- Decide how many extra jobs a month you want from ads.
- Multiply by your cost per booked job.
- Check the result buys enough clicks a day to learn from.
- Run it for 60 to 90 days before judging it.
An illustrative example: 10 extra jobs at the benchmark $182 to $303 a job is $1,820 to $3,030 in monthly spend.
The daily floor matters too. At $27 a click, a $30 day buys one click. That is not enough data to learn anything in a month.
Our rule of thumb is a budget that buys at least ten clicks a day on the core service. If it cannot, narrow the area or the services. Or start with Local Services Ads instead.
Ads are one line in the plan. Our marketing budget guide shows how they fit with SEO, your profile and everything else.
Are Local Services Ads cheaper than Google search ads?
Per lead, usually yes. Local Services Ads charge per lead, not per click. You can dispute leads that were spam or out of area.
On our junk removal account, September 2026 brought 20 charged leads. They cost $302 in total.
That is $15.09 a lead.
The catch is control. You cannot pick keywords or write the ad. Volume is capped by how many people search and how fast you answer.
Most contractors should run both. Local Services Ads take the cheap emergency calls. Search ads chase the big ticket jobs that the listing does not cover. Our Google Ads for contractors guide covers the setup.
Lead marketplaces are a different deal again. We compare them in Thumbtack vs Angi.
How do you keep Google Ads costs down?
Most wasted spend in the trades is not a bidding problem. It comes from the wrong searches and the unanswered phone.
The fixes that save the most:
- Add negative keywords for “jobs”, “salary”, “diy” and “how to”.
- Set the location to people in your area, not people interested in it.
- Send each ad group to a page about that service, with the phone number up top.
- Pause ads during hours nobody answers.
- Track calls by keyword and cut what never books.
The phone matters most. Invoca’s 2026 home services report found only about 52 percent of callers reach a live person.
A CallRail survey found 82 percent of consumers would call a competitor after an unanswered call. Every missed call is a click you paid for and handed away.
Answer live, and text back missed calls within a minute. Our speed to lead guide has the sequence.
Frequently asked questions
How much do Google Ads cost per click?
It depends on the search. Across home services, LocaliQ’s 2026 benchmark averages $8.33 a click. Roofing, HVAC and plumbing searches often cost $20 to $30, while lawn, junk removal and dumpster searches run about $3 to $8.
How much does Google Ads cost per month?
Whatever you set. Google charges at most 30.4 times your average daily budget in a month. The right figure is your target jobs times your cost per booked job, plus management.
Is there a minimum budget for Google Ads?
Google sets none. The practical minimum is the budget that buys enough clicks to learn. In our view that is about ten clicks a day on your main service.
Why is my Google Ads cost per lead so high?
Usually broad keywords, a weak landing page or missed calls. Check the search terms report for junk searches. Then check how many calls went unanswered, because those leads were paid for and lost.
Are Google Ads worth it for a small contractor?
Yes, when the cost per booked job is well under the profit on the job. They suit big tickets and emergencies best. If your budget is tight, start with Local Services Ads and your free Business Profile first.
